Floor tiles that pop up, lift into a ridge or crack along a line are almost always telling you something about the floor beneath them. The cause is usually movement, heat or poor adhesive coverage, not bad luck. A single cracked tile is a quick job, but a whole row that has tented needs the cause found first, or the replacement will fail too. Send one request describing what you see, and tilers in your area quote to inspect and repair it. It is free and there is no obligation.
Why floor tiles pop up and explode
Tiles expand slightly in summer heat and the screed beneath them moves as it dries and settles. If there is no room for that movement, the pressure builds along a line until the tiles buckle upwards, a fault known as tenting, and sometimes break with a loud crack. It tends to happen on hot afternoons or after a cold snap on the Highveld.
The usual causes are:
- No movement joints at the walls, doorways and across large areas, so tiles are wedged tight against each other.
- Poor adhesive coverage, where large tiles sit on dabs instead of a full bed and the edges are unsupported.
- A screed laid too soon, which keeps shrinking and cracks the tiles over it.
- Moisture rising from the slab or leaking from a pipe, which weakens the bond.
Finding loose and hollow tiles
Tap the floor with a coin or the handle of a screwdriver. Firmly bonded tiles give a dull, solid click, while loose ones sound hollow and drummy. Mark the hollow tiles with masking tape. A few hollow tiles in the middle of a room can often be fixed on their own, but a large hollow area or a ridge across several tiles points to a movement problem that needs a movement joint cut in.
Look also at the grout lines and the corners where the floor meets the wall. Hairline cracks that follow a straight line often track a crack in the slab underneath, and the tiler may recommend a flexible adhesive or a crack-isolation layer when retiling.
Replacing a tile, regrouting and resealing
To replace one tile, the tiler cuts out the grout around it, breaks it into pieces and chips out the old adhesive, then sets a new tile in fresh adhesive with the right joint width. Matching is the hard part: tiles from your original batch are ideal, so keep spares from the first job. If the range is discontinued, a close match laid in a pattern that looks deliberate is better than a poor copy.
Regrouting removes stained or crumbling grout and fills the joint again, which freshens a floor without lifting a tile. In bathrooms, re-siliconing the corners and around the bath or shower tray stops water getting behind the tiles. For wider jobs, see tilers.
Lifting old tiles safely
If a section has to come up, the tiler uses a hammer and chisel or an electric breaker and wears a dust mask, since cutting and breaking tile releases silica dust. Old vinyl floor tiles, especially from before about 1990, may contain asbestos. Do not sand, scrape or break them. Get a sample tested and use a registered asbestos contractor if the result is positive. Repair costs run from R250 to R700 per m², with a minimum call-out for small jobs.
